Risks involved in Batista Procedure

The increased size of the left ventricle in dilated cardiomyopathy leads to inability of the heart to function normally, and causes stress on the heart muscle. The Batista procedure involves removing a small slice of the muscle from the enlarged ventricle.

With increased mortality rate and progressive deterioration in the cardiac function of the patient,
Batista procedure is considered risky by the cardiac faculty. The risks involved in Batista procedure are as follows.
1. High mortality rate
2. Alleviation of chances of nerve damage during surgery leading to arrhythmia
3. Progressive cardiac failure and Cardiac death

However, it was studied that out of 59 patients who underwent the Batista procedure, only 25% showed improvement. 33 % of the patients deteriorated rapidly after the procedure, and the rest showed temporary improvement followed by deterioration then on.
